Musical Education

Studied organ performing with Mgr Carmelo Scerri, organist at Luçon Cathedral France (1935-40) and St John's Co-Cathedral Valletta Malta (1946-1981).

Studied theory and harmony with Mro Carmelo Pace, Malta's foremost composer of the 20th century.

University Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (M.D.) - University of Malta (1985).

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Health Information Science, with distinction - University of Warwick, England (1990).

Music Qualifications

Associated Board (Royal Schools of Music, London) Grade examinations in Organ Performing: All grades up to 8 passed with Distinction.

Music Activities

St Julian's Parish Church: Organist since 1976.

Documentation of organs: Since 1977, systematic documentation of pipe organs in Malta and Gozo.

Playing of important organs abroad: 1984 to date.  These include the organs in Westminster Cathedral, Coventry Cathedral, Newcastle Cathedrals, Chelmsford Cathedral, St Mary’s Collegiate Church, Warwick (Engand); Salzburg Cathedral, Kollegien Kirche, Salzburg; Votiv Kirche, Vienna; Eisenstadt Cathedral (Austria), Paderborn Cathedral (Germany), St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh (Scotland), Matthias Church, Budapest (Hungary), St James Basilica, Prague (Czech Republic), St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin (Republic of Ireland).

St Julian's Choir: Principal organist from 1978 to 1998.  Two concert tours abroad: Austria in 1985, Germany in 1989. 

Mdina Cathedral Museum: Since 1982, transcription, notation and editing of musical works.  These include the Missa Virginis Mariae by Claudio Merulo (1568) and various works by Maltese composers of the 18th century.

St Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral, Valletta: Organist since 1983.  Choirmaster since 1990.

St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta: Organist locum tenens in 1985-86.

University of Warwick Choir, England: Organist during 1989-90 season.  Concert tour to Austria and Germany in 1990.

St Peter's Church, Leamington, England: Organist on an occasional basis, 1989-90

Amadeus Chamber Choir: Principal organist from its foundation in 1990 to 1998.  Three foreign tours: England in 1991, Scotland in 1995, Hungary and Austria in 1997.

CD of Sacred Arias by Maltese Composers: Recorded in 1995 and published in 1996 with Andrew Sapiano, tenor, and Joseph Vella Bondin, bass.

Cantores Sancti Juliani: Organist on an occasional basis since the International Children’s Choir Festival held in Malta in April 1998. 

St Paul Choral Society: Founder and Musical Director.  From its foundation in May 1998 to date this polyphonic SATB choir has sung more than 20 times in public, including at St Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, in Mdina Cathedral, at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and at the President’s Palace.

Editing of book on Old Organs in Malta and Gozo: A 280 page book published in September 1999 after seven years of research work and collaboration with Dr Luciano Buono, a Sicilian musicologist.
