| The above
photo taken in Rome soon after the choir ‘s participation in the festival
brings nice memories. Although the event is still fresh and vivid
in our minds, we cherish every moment spent in Rome. It is true that
there were some mishaps with the hotel in central Rome, but this did not
in any way deter the experience gained during this cultural event.
Those who were
with us in Rome saw for themselves the preparations made by other choirs.
There were thirthyfour of them and the choir directors attended to all
their presentations. Infact, when the group was taken to various
tours, the choir directors attended the festival where they could evaluate
the standard of the choirs participating. Undoubtedly the standard
was very high indeed, especially with the choirs coming from the Czech
Republic.
One would have
easily noticed the technique used which although was universally noticeable,
the temperament and interpretation of all choirs varied to a certain degree.
The choirmasters, being individuals, had their own interpretation and this
added to the interest the festival generated. This was quite an experience
and although we would have liked the choristers to see for themselves and
appreciate the choirs’ renderings, it was not considered possible due to
the length of time. It would have become boring and too taxing.
However, we enjoyed every minute of it and we met various conductors and
choristers from the choirs coming from all parts of the globe.
The experience
gained in Rome will do us well for the future. Although the choir
directors have a very good experience with the workings of local choirs,
having both served at the helm in local choirs’ committees, they came in
direct contact with foreign choirs and discussed with them various aspects,
certainly not missing the technical side.
We did very
well. Winning a special medal for the best youngest participation
was no mean feat considering that we did not travel to Rome to win any
honours. Our intention and mission was to lead the choir in getting
experience in this choral field. Having won them, made us very happy as
it showed that our efforts bore fruit.
If we continue
in this direction there are other opportunities that our youngsters may
benefit from. They have honoured Malta in no mean way.
